How do I determine the process for legally burning in Chatham County?

You must contact the Georgia Forestry to obtain a burn permit. More information is available at the Georgia Forestry Commission.

How do I determine what types material is it legal for me to burn in Chatham County?

Only vegetative matter that was grown on your property such as straw, leaves, and limbs may be burned in Chatham County. No manmade materials and you must have a valid burn permit from Georgia Forestry. You can search the Georgia Law database to find the rules governing burning with the keyword "12-6-90". Southside Fire/EMS does not endorse a specific business that fills extinguishers however, several are listed in the yellow pages of the phone book under the heading of “Fire Extinguishers”. For more information on fire extinguishers, please visit our Fire Education and Prevention page.

How do I react when I am in my car and approached by an emergency vehicle operating its lights and siren what should do?

You should pull to the right and stop.  This allows fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles adequate and clear lanes to safely and quickly continue its response.

Not at this time. The best course of action is to call your water provider and ask them for their policy on this issue.

How do I donate my house to the Fire Department when it is slated for demolition, what is the process for doing that?

The best way to do this is to contact our Headquarters at 354-1011 and ask to speak to our training officer. If the home to be donated is suitable, they can be burned in a controlled manner for training purposes.

I just saw an emergency vehicle operating lights and sirens abruptly switch off its warning systems and begin driving normally. Were they just trying to get through the traffic without waiting?

When emergency vehicles are dispatched to an emergency many times they are requested by bystanders who think an emergency may exist and sometimes they are cancelled prior to arrival at an emergency scene by Law Enforcement or other emergency responders. It is a violation of Georgia Law and Company policy to utilize emergency warning systems for any other reason than a response to an emergency.

I occasionally see regular cars and trucks with emergency lights and sirens responding to various emergency calls, what is going on?

Southside Fire/EMS is a combination fire department. Combination Fire Department utilized volunteers as well as career firefighter/medics. Volunteers can respond to an emergency in fire department vehicle or in their personal vehicle.

How do I get my blood pressure checked by the SSFD/EMS Firefighter/medics?

All you need to do is stop by any Southside Station, including our Headquarters during normal business hours and ask for a BP Check. Visit our divisions map to locate a fire station closest to you.

I went by my neighborhood Fire Station and no one was there, is this typical?

Occasionally the firefighter/medics are running emergency calls and other times they are engaging in training exercises in their service area and can respond to emergency calls from that training location.

Does SSFD/EMS offer training to the community?

Frequently Southside offers CPR training free or for a nominal fee. Southside also works with other agencies such as Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) and Safe Kids of Savannah to offer various training opportunities to the community. Are the Ambulance Personnel trained as Firefighters and Vice Versa?

Yes. Southside Requires all personnel to be cross-trained in both EMS and Firefighting. This provides and all around superior emergency responder will has a wealth of knowledge to draw from. In March of 2004 Southside Fire/EMS required all new employees to ultimately become certified at the highest level of medical responder in the state of Georgia, which is Paramedic.
